We had same situation. What we did was put them in the play area under very close, constant supervision several times. Then we put them both into a "new" home, that was new to both of them, trying to lessen the territory fighting, if there was to be any. They've been living together almost a year now. Oh, timeline of us doing this....I think it was around 2 or 3 weeks. Probably overly careful, but we didn't want anyone getting hurt.
Hope that helps some.

I worked in a pet store for three years, and what i was taught was take two open cages and stick them side my side...put the one rat in the one cage, and put the other in the second cage..i really wouldnt chance putting them together somewhere cuz they might fight..regardless if your superivsing or not it takes one bite to cause damage to the other rat. Do the cage bonding for atleast a week and then slowly interact them together...this process will let them smell and observe eachother before they are actually in the same cage.

yes, very very slow. It will happen and they will be best friends in a month or so. Also, take them out and play with them together, but give your older rat more attention so that she doesn't feel threatened. The more playing in 'common ground', the better.
Eventually, you might just have to let them fight it out in the home. Clean it first, so all the smells are new. But the older one is going to claim dominance and pin the younger one down a few times. Once they get through that stage, all is heaven in rat land Good luck!!

i clean the cage thoroughly, then rearrange all the toys, hammocks, food dishes, etc. before putting homeboys and newbie in the cage together. it keeps the homeboys from feeling too territorial.
i also put a tiny dab of vanilla extract under everyone's tail before putting them together for the first time (outside the cage), which seems to calm everyone down. i read that it gives them a common ground due to having the same scent.

take them out at play time so that way they can smell each other. we just got a new baby 2 days ago .our cage is 2 parts so can dived them up putting the new baby rat on the bottom and the older once on top only at playtime r they together. it takes about 3 or 4 days maybe sooner play it by ear. good luck and have lots of fun ...lee >-<
