has anyone managed to teach their rat to respond to simple commands? I have a young male who seems to stand, chase etc quite naturally and i'm sure he loves the interaction.

we taught several of our rats "stand" "walk" and "circle". they started out wanting the treats after the trick, but now they just like to do the tricks for us on command. they love the special attention after tricks. i think it helps keep them interested in learning and playing.

Marley is the only one i have that will eat out of his cage, hence the only one motivated enough to tempt! But as I say, he's very playful, interactive and only 10 wks old, so a good time to start?

we start them as soon as they are big enough to get 'out of cage' time. also, our older rats who already know the tricks help out the younger ones. it helps to have a big sister or brother to help teach haha we use yogies as their trick incentives. at first they only want the yogies but eventually come to enjoy the trick for what it is.

I've taught my rats to associate me rustling a bag with getting treats. This comes in very handy if they're out and I can't find them. All I have to do is rustle a bag, and they come right out for me to receive their treat.

Sandy and I had a male rat named George. As soon as she would let him out of his cage, no matter where I was, he would come running as fast as his little skinny legs would take him. When I was in the "den" on the couch for instance, he would come running and then because the floor was "slick" he would kind of slide into a stop, jump up on me and snuggle under my chin while I petted him and talked to him. He would eventually fall asleep right there and I would watch TV while he napped. Then all of the sudden he would wake up and he was READY to go. He would chase a small cat ball, he would chase my empty pill bottles (cleaned of any residue of the drug with the cap on!) and yes, he would come to his name. Every night before going back in his cage, we went through the same thing and it was Wonderful. Oh, he wouldn't do his business outside of his cage so Sandy put a ladder up and he would go and due his thing, then come back out to play. He never hid from us, bit us, or did anything cruel at all. George was my Buddy and I still miss him.

I love this site! I am seriously considering getting some rats in the near future, and seeing all of your pictures of your furry friends, reading your stories, and hearing how smart and sweet they are, it just makes me want them even more!!! I can't wait to add them to my family!!!
