I didn't mean to start any sort of drama. I simply meant musicians change lives, some thru songs, some thru charitable donations, some thru both. The PR machine can be a monster. A new thread is needed to take the 'success' discussion further. I only want Michael to be as big as he wants. I thought that is what I said. "I have a new goal tho, and that is to see Michael go as high as he wants to go! I can see him and Heather taking a place near U2 or REM status, but that is my dream."

Well I first discovered Michael when 620 West Surf came out and I was lucky enough to get hold of one of few copies that made it to the UK at the time. Was 2005 though before I discovered he was still alive and kicking. Since then it's been a world wind romance seeing Michael on several UK appearances and in Europe. We once met up in New York to go see U2 but Michael was a day too early so never quite happened.
Best concert for me is probably when he headlined the Borderline in London. He'd pestered me for months saying he wanted to play there, and through some kind of miracle it happened. That gig also helped spawn LA Woman - but that's another story.
Best overall memories are Greenbelt 2007 when Michael totally blew the festival away playing every gig we could get there. More recently getting the chance to see Michael's growing fan base in Italy was a great privilege having helped make his first trip there happen.
Knowing that Deal With the Devil is on the new album guarantees my continued excitement in all things McDermott.

I first learned about Michael in Nov 1993. I was attending college in Boston and was a very big fan of Aimee Mann's at the time. she played at the Avalon, a venue behind Fenway Park.
I went, and this guy with his band opened. I remember the first song to this day - the lyric was: "I'm too wounded to hurt". I remember thinking how great a line that was, and is. It took about a year and half before I knew who Michael was - I met someone from Chicago who was living in LA. She told me to buy Geth - so I did. Since then, I've been a fan.
I went from Nov 1993 to Nov 1999 before seeing him live again. It was when he played Philly in Nov 1999.
So it's been nearly 20 yrs - I was done listening to Aimee Mann by 1996.

Brian, I love that last line of your comment. During a visit to Great Barrington, MA in Jan. 1994, we discovered a CD called "Gethsemane" while scavenging in a used CD store. It proved a wonderful find that led to so many others -- including the self titled album two years later (and yes, those amazing, unforgettable lines of "Wounded") plus meeting Michael in 2001, along with a host of like minded friends who share my appreciation of his work -- including you. And, all these years after that I, too, am still listening.
Thanks for sharing!

I first heard Michael back in 91 I believe. WMMR was playing Wall and I was blown away by the lyrics. I went on to find out that Michael was about 18 at the time he wrote and couldn't believe a guy so young could write like that. I lost track for a few years and got back listening when Last CHance Lounge was released. Haven't stopped listening since.
My first show was at the Point in Bryn Mawr, PA on August 18, 2001. I really enjoyed the show. There's no substitute for listening to quality music and Michael delivers. Mil I believe that's when we first met. I still have the pics you sent me. Thanks!

Steve, I remember that Point show very well -- and the pics you mentioned, which featured Michael's black Takamine guitar. Do you still have its twin?

No I do not. After my band folded like a cheap lawn chair I downsized and sold lots of my gear. I don't have a Gibson J-45 like Michael plays now, but I do have a knock-off Epiphone Masterbilt that looks just like it. Now if I could only play like Michael....lol.
