I've copied and pasted everyone's answers to this topic from the Wall page to this board because it would be a shame for all this valuable info to be lost as it moves into oblivion down the Wall. Feel free to add more replies here.
Tanis Heinitz: Peas and broc are a big hit at my house. I feed carrots rarely due to the sugar content of them. During the summer they get corn on the cob about once a month. As for fruit I try to get them to eat blueberries but they are not real fond of them. I give bananas once in awhile.
Ann Cairns: sweetcorn.... preferably still on the cob, and the reason I know they like this so much....... because they stole it off my plate and within 10 mins I found a bare husk lol xx
Elle J Morgan: I feed my ratties a wide range of fruits and veggies. They aren't super picky. They really love black grapes.
Jessica Alberts: We give our girls whatever fruit we have at the time, just a little. Plums, watermelon, nectarines, cherries, oranges...they like 'em all but as far as veggies, they get frozen peas everyday and LOVE 'em!
Mary Klein Savelli: I try to give them a variety, but I think their favorites are cantelope, bananas and peas.
Tobey Schollmeyer: I never thought about the corn...what a great idea!!
Jessica Alberts: blueberries too when they're on sale..
Christen Stone: Mine love peas and carrots (but not too much carrot), bananas, and whatever other fruits we have on hand. I've heard conflicting things about corn, is it good for them or not? I think my boys would love a cob!
Fran Maloney-Doremus: Just found out that mine love, love, love cherry tomatoes! We give them corn on the cob all the time. And they love apples and bananas.
Whitney Olsen: Mine are big carrot fans, but like everyone else, I'm careful not to do that too often... stinky orange poopies are gross. Mine are obsessed with frozen corn and peas. (I buy big discount bags at the grocery store so it's affordable--I have 18 furry fatties!) They also occasionally get frozen grapes (thawed), apple, and broccoli.
Whitney Olsen: Next year, I'll probably plant squash just for my rats to dine on. The ratteries around here report that their rats love crookneck and zucchini squash.
Joni Williams Applonie : Mine prefer a chunk of chicken or a pasta noodle before veggies or fruits. They love bananas!
Clare Whitehead: baby sweetcorn - and i agree about the big orange carrot poos!
Amanda Jane Caputo: Mine like bananas and LOVE grapes. Grapes are the only fruit they won't get tired of. Both of them REFUSE to eat carrots, but love peas and corn.
Jessica Alberts: @whitney the carrots I give my 2 girls are the shaving style pieces that come in a bag of salad. Or half a baby carrot, although my my girl Rainy doesn't like carrots at all and the other girl Snowy loves loves loves the little bit of carrot she gets!
Gary Fisher: mine like tomatos and apples they also like oranges and pineapple
Helen Nuttyrat Beaven: my boys loooove banana and melon
Jessica Alberts: I'm requesting some of you as friends since we share an interest in ratties
Ann Cairns: what is everyones opinion on nuts?! Mines love the occasional hazelnut, and I give it to them in the shell so they have to use their brains to get it out :-) Apart from sweetcorn they also love banana (in the skin) cherry tomatoes, cucumber and baked beans.
Suzanne Jodoin Knowles: brocolli, bok choy, peas, carrots and tomatoes. For fruit I give banana, blueberries and melon
Judith Bingenheimer-Zurawski: Mine get a mixture, green beans, broccoli, lima beans, corn, peas, black eyed peas and I put some of the microwave brown rice with the mix. They love grapes, melons, bananas, kale, cherry tomatoes, apples, pears, berries, and soy free yogurt (Nogurt)...Oh, and did I mention..they are very spoiled lol :-)
Sherri Bryan: Mine go mad for avocado!!
Barb Mallon: Mine LOVE bananas steamed zucchini, corn, tomatoes, green and red peppers and strawberries! We eat a ton of veggies, so they always get a nice portion of our dinner.
Natasha Millikan: Oh what a wonderful list!! We just got our ratties about a week ago and I have been reading rat books like mad. Here is some of what I have read: Corn can produce gas, which is why some lab blocks and seed mixes are bad. Most books recomm...end mostly commercial foods, 20% veg/fruit. To ward off strokes, celery, parsley, and prunes are good. Male rats should not have oranges which can cause kidney damage or cancer. For viral infections, cranberries, strawberries, bananas, raspberries, mustard, green tea. For arthritis, cloves, ginger, garlic, dates. Vitamin enriched cereal flakes for antioxidants. .. more..
Natasha Millikan: Do NOT give: raw dry beans or peanuts (antinutrients); green bananas (inhibit starch digestion); green potato skin (solanine, a toxin); insects or discarded meats (can contain parasites); raw BULK tofu (can contain bacteria). Also LIMIT: corn, eggplant, lettuce, radish, spinach, collard greens, turnip greens, beets, celery, due to nitrates. This was all from Rat Training, by Miriam Fields-Babineau.
Wendy Hill: My two ratties love carrots and bananas but are really into salmon and hard boiled egg!
Helen Nuttyrat Beaven: @ Natasha...thank you for the information
Stephanie Moore: My three get whatever we have on hand.. pretty much anything different from their pellet food is a huge hit and we've only had them a couple of months so we're still experimenting. Raisins, apple, snap green beans, carrots, and brocolli so far. I haven't tried any melons or other soft fruits.. that sounds like a wonderfully messy good time . The true height of rattie treats in our house though are berry yogurt drops.. they go nuts when they see the bag.
Natasha Millikan: Debbie Ducommun adds to the NEVER list: carbonated beverages, raw sweet potato, raw red cabbage and brussels sprouts, and raw artichokes. In her book RATS: Practical Advice From The Expert, she lists a weekly menu: (Mon) berries, kale, spro...uts, beans; (Tue) banana, broccoli, tomato, sweet potato, cod lever oil; (Wed) grapes/raisins, beans, bok choy, parsely; (Thur) melon, broccoli, corn, liver/oysters; (Fri) apple, kale, squash, beans; (Sat) bananas, broccoli, peas, sweet potato; (Sun) plums/prunes, bok choy, carrots, liver/oysters. We are giving our kids a very healthy dog food (on advice from their breeder, tara from Bigapple rattery), rat block (sometimes they eat it), dry pasta and oatmeal (also on Tara's advice), and fruits and veggies such as (so far) fresh broccoli, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, berries, and apples; and frozen peas, mixed vegetables, butternut squash, and corn; and crackers, whole grain tortillas, walnuts, and cheese. They really love the broccoli and peas. Oh and soy yogurt as a training treat.
Jessica Alberts: oh hard boiled eggs are #1 with my girls as are mini teddy grahams and cheese and yogurt drops
Natasha Millikan: One more comment: As treats I have been reading in the rat books that professional trainers have used cheerios, cocoa krispies, yogurt drops, baby food, mashed bananas, mashed avocado, cat food, gummi bears, animal crackers, and sunflower seeds.
Helen Nuttyrat Beaven: mine loooove cheerios...i thread them onto string and hang them from the top of the cage
Jesi Ford: Mine get carrots, peas, leafy greens like spinach, baked chicken, corn on the cob, oranges, apples, grapes, all kinds! They love pea pods too.
Shannon Johnson: Our rats love it if we put a whole apple in their cage and let them chew on it for awhile. They also love fresh peas and carrots.
Jesi Ford Oh and their bedtime snack is honey nut cheerios. They refuse to eat regular ones and look at me like WTH? when they don't get them at bedtime lol.
Sarah Eastwood: broccoli flourettes, a small bit of sliced carrots and some celery. The big hit? Celery. as for fruit, tried banana chips and dehydrated strawberries.
Christina L Thomas: PEAS!! For some reason, my boys love peas. And they only eat the insides--they spit out the skin when they're done. *shaking head* I don't get it... ♥
Christina L Thomas: And for fruit, they go crazy for bananas, dried or fresh.
18 hours ago · LikeUnlike · · The Rodent Reader Quarterly Thank you, everyone for the comments. VERY interesting and informative!!! And, anyone who has more to add, feel free!
Thoma Erwin Thacker: When i had them (they're all over the rainbow bridge now), I fed them bananas, apple chunks, a little melon, kiwi on occasion, and sometimes cherries. They got for veggies, carrot, peas, an occasional bite or two of tomato, baked squash, and when sick, squash babyfood. They sometimes would eat green beans from my veggie soup, and loved the broth. I cook with low salt, so just about anything from there was a hit! In their cereal mix I put dehydrated tomato, peas, and bananas as well as dried fruit bites from del monte, toasted oat cereal, puffed wheat and rice, steel cut oats, a small handfull of pumpkin seeds, or unsalted sunflower seeds, and depending on their taste, they'd sometimes like a unsalted roasted peanut.
Josh Emrick: Mine always love when I buy a pineapple, after cutting the skin off, there's always that bit of fruit on the inside of the skin that's left. I give them all my scraps and they go nuts for it. My hermit crabs always get a share of that as well, being the tropical scavengers they are. As far as veggies, their favorite has to be corn on the cob. They widdle it down to about the size of a thick pencil, I think its hilarious.
Cheryl Taylor: Mine adore cucumber, apple, pear & banana. Also rats can eat a lot of the foods we do, chicken and eggs are a favorite. Soft boil an egg, crack it open and watch them work their way inside. This also gives them something to think about too....
Also scrambled eggs, chicken diced into little chunks, pretty much any fresh or dried fruits, peppers, cooked veg leftovers, hard roasted bones (you can usualy find these in a petstore).
I also bury bits around the cage for them to forrage for, they really enjoy this.
Now, this might sound gross, but rats are very partial to mealworms and crickets from time to time too.
Melissa Wagner: Corn...LOVE corn...
Amber Mericle: My girls get everything I eat. Bananas, apples, strawberries, blueberries, zucchini, carrots, lettuce, spinach etc. And I guess they're pigs because they eat everything! (unless I hang around too long because then they would rather be held and pet than eat!) ♥
Alyson E. Fün: I have read that corn can contribute to cancer in male rats. I give my 2 female mice kale, parsley, lettuce from the garden, broccoli, raisins, oats, pieces of cereal, walnut hunks, and millet seeds. they also love eating avocado - they lick it off my fingers!
Hillary Shubert: Cucumbers!! And green beans... my rats love them from the can, though. I have never had a pet rat that couldn't inhale a green bean in under 5 seconds. They love them!!
Mari Bee Bok Choy: and small peas. He'll dive for those first
Winona Morris Corn on the cob, and watermelon both drive them nuts. I've given them cucumber, and they eat the seed but leave the "meat" behind.
Esther Landau: Well, all of the above plus: celery leaves, fresh herbs (basil, thyme, mint, parsley), cooked potatoes, cooked onions, and they actually love fresh garlic but it makes the cage reek, so I don't do it. They like persimmon and mango. Ummm... ...They are not fans of radishes. They LOVE garbanzo beans - our little guy was all flustered because he wanted to grab all 4 beans in the dish and then stash them in the corner, but he could only carry one in his mouth and maybe one more in his front paws. What if I make two trips and the other beans are GONE when I get back??? Rattie stress.
Laura N Lindhome: Sweet corn and Avocados why? they are high in fat and they love the taste! I give them a much wider range though.
Kristen Noel: my girls love love love kale and broccoli.
Madison Fickel: my babies love romaine and cucumbers
Ronnie Rosenberg: Mine like diced carrots and kale, along with apple esp. if I put peanut butter on it, romaine lettuce, and mashed banana.
Susan Carthy: mine love green seedless grapes, banana and pears best, very occasional strawberries.
Susan Carthy: oh yes i forgot peas specially cold ones in summer
Susan Carthy: like most veg too
Kayla De Soto: Grapes! Strawberries! Watermelon! Peaches!!! They just chose those over the others LOL The fancy loves Grapes and the Albino loves Strawberries!!!
Cindy Holmlund: Mine prefer fruits, watermelon, cantaloupe, and grapes particullarly...NOT so fond of bananas...Maybe too sticky, considering they are clean freaks...Veg's..they love cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, onions, lettuce and corn...Corn has little ...nutritional value tho...So, only as a small treat...Rats are scavengers by nature, so they will eat just about ANYTHING...I have treated mine to shredded wheat, and even corn flakes, but in SMALL moderation...My rats tend to live around 3 years, which SHULD be average...A happy, spoiled rat lives longer than a miserable constant same old diet one...I think. I have had to give my rat nebulizer treatments, for pneumonia...and still they lived a long happy, prosperous, appreciated life! =)
Susan Carthy: not fuit or veg i know but mine love low fat yogurt and their coats really shine on this, for breakie lol
Jean Scarlett I feed my two hairless rats bananas with peanut butter on them. This seems to be there favorite food of all although they enjoy apples, cucumbers, okra and many other things.

All of the above, plus (sorry if I've missed these somewhere above)
- steamed kale
- brown rice (and other rices) cooked
- blackberries, currants, melons
One thing they love is their holistic fruit shake some mornings:
2 tbsp pro-biotic plain yogurt (if on doxycycline, you can use soft tofu instead)
1/2 tsp honey
Sprinkle of crushed flax seeds
Sprinkle of wheat germ
1 tbsp fresh or frozen fruit (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, etc.)
1 tbsp soy or rice milk
1 tsp baby rice cereal
Blend all well in a small container; can be refrigerated for a few days.
You can vary the milkshake blends and add some cooked veg with the fruit too.
Rats love it; a nice way to provide their fruits and veggies.
